Don Gudaitis, CEO of the American Cancer Society New England Division http://www.cancer.org/, discusses the importance of green building and sustainability in relation to the prevention, treatment, and elimination of cancer.
Cleaner air, cleaner water, and less energy use aid in the ACS mission of eliminating cancer on a global scale by providing healthier communities and decreasing the environment's impact on the quality of life. Don talks about how the green aspects of the Gold LEED-Certified AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Boston, a temporary residence health care building, help to create the healthiest environment possible for lodging patients who are undergoing cancer treatment and may have compromised immune systems. The cost savings derived from the building's highly efficient energy systems will be used to further support cancer patients. The solar hot water system, installed by Littlefoot Energy, reduces heating hot water costs by 50% by using the sustainable power of the sun. The minimal energy consumption of the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Boston benefits both the cancer patients who are lodging there and the community at large. The American Cancer Society will continue to set examples of how to create healthier environments for everybody by means of green building and sustainability.
